Best Practices for IIC

Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of India has established ‘MHRD’s Innovation Cell (MIC)’ to systematically foster the culture of Innovation amongst all Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). The primary mandate of MIC is to encourage, inspire and nurture young students by supporting them to work with new ideas and transform them into prototypes while they are informative years.

  • Fostering Innovation: Encouraging a culture of innovation and creativity among students and faculty members by providing them with resources, guidance, and opportunities to develop innovative solutions to real-world challenges.
  • Promoting Entrepreneurship: Supporting aspiring entrepreneurs within the institution by providing mentorship, training, and networking opportunities to help them transform their innovative ideas into viable startups or enterprises.
  • Facilitating Collaboration: Facilitating collaboration and knowledge sharing among different departments, disciplines, and stakeholders within the institution to leverage diverse perspectives and expertise for innovation.
  • Building Ecosystem: Building a vibrant innovation ecosystem within the institution that includes incubation centers, innovation labs, and industry partnerships to support and nurture innovative ideas and projects.
  • Skill Development: Providing training, workshops, and skill development programs to enhance the innovation and entrepreneurial capabilities of students, faculty members, and staff.
  • Networking and Outreach: Facilitating networking and outreach activities to connect students, faculty members, and startups with industry experts, investors, and other stakeholders to exchange ideas, seek feedback, and explore collaboration opportunities.
  • Promoting Best Practices: Identifying and promoting best practices in innovation and entrepreneurship education, research, and commercialization to enhance the institution's reputation and competitiveness.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: Monitoring the progress and impact of innovation and entrepreneurship initiatives within the institution and evaluating the effectiveness of policies, programs, and resources allocated to support them.
  • Overall, an Institution Innovation Council plays a crucial role in nurturing a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship within educational institutions, fostering collaboration and creativity, and preparing students to become future innovators, leaders, and job creators.

Major Focus of IIC

  • Purpose: The primary focus of an Institutional Innovation Council is to foster a culture of innovation within an organization or institution. This includes encouraging creativity, problem-solving, and forward-thinking among employees or members.
  • Structure: The council often comprises individuals from diverse backgrounds and expertise levels within the institution. This ensures a broad range of perspectives and ideas are considered in the innovation process.
  • Leadership: The council is usually led by senior leaders or executives who champion innovation and provide strategic direction. Their role is to support and empower the council members to drive innovation initiatives forward.
  • Initiative Management: The council is responsible for overseeing various innovation projects and initiatives within the institution. This includes identifying opportunities for innovation, evaluating proposals, allocating resources, and monitoring progress.
  • Collaboration: Collaboration is a key aspect of institutional innovation. The council facilitates collaboration between different departments, teams, and stakeholders to leverage collective knowledge and expertise.
  • Risk-Taking: Innovation inherently involves taking risks and exploring new ideas that may not always succeed. The council encourages a culture where failure is seen as a learning opportunity and where individuals feel empowered to experiment and take calculated risks.
  • Impact Assessment: The council evaluates the impact of innovation initiatives on the institution's goals, performance, and stakeholders. This involves measuring outcomes, gathering feedback, and making adjustments as necessary to maximize value.
  • Continuous Improvement: Innovation is an ongoing process, and the council is responsible for continuously improving and refining the institution's innovation strategies, processes, and capabilities over time.
  • Overall, the major focus of an Institutional Innovation Council is to drive positive change, enhance competitiveness, and promote sustainable growth within the institution through innovation.

Function of IIC

  • The functions of an Institutional Innovation Council can vary depending on the goals and objectives of the institution. However, here are some common functions that such a council might typically perform:
  • Setting Innovation Strategy: The council is responsible for developing and articulating the institution's innovation strategy, including defining objectives, priorities, and areas of focus.
  • Promoting Innovation Culture: One of the primary functions is to foster a culture of innovation within the institution. This involves promoting creativity, risk-taking, collaboration, and open communication across all levels of the organization.
  • Identifying Opportunities: The council continuously scans the internal and external environment to identify emerging trends, technologies, and opportunities for innovation that align with the institution's strategic goals.
  • Supporting Innovation Initiatives: The council supports and facilitates innovation initiatives and projects throughout their lifecycle. This includes providing resources, guidance, and expertise to help teams bring their ideas to fruition.
  • Resource Allocation: Allocating financial, human, and other resources to innovation projects based on their strategic importance, potential impact, and resource requirements.
  • Monitoring Progress: Monitoring and evaluating the progress of innovation initiatives against predefined metrics and milestones. This may involve regular review meetings, progress reports, and performance assessments.
  • Removing Barriers: Identifying and addressing barriers or obstacles that hinder innovation within the institution. This could include cultural resistance, bureaucratic processes, lack of resources, or other challenges.
  • Facilitating Collaboration: Encouraging cross-functional collaboration and knowledge sharing among different departments, teams, and stakeholders to leverage diverse perspectives and expertise.
  • Managing Intellectual Property: Developing policies and procedures for managing intellectual property rights related to innovation, including patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets.
  • Celebrating Success: Recognizing and celebrating successful innovation efforts and achievements to reinforce a positive innovation culture and inspire others to innovate.
  • Learning and Development: Providing training, workshops, and other learning opportunities to enhance the innovation capabilities of employees and stakeholders.
  • External Engagement: Building relationships and partnerships with external stakeholders, including industry partners, research institutions, government agencies, and startups, to access external expertise, funding, and collaboration opportunities.
